1. Eligibility

This exam schedule applies to students graduating from a Master's program at the University of Tokyo by the end of March, 2022.

Additional eligibility requirements can be found in the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences Guidelines for Applicants.

2. Application Period

Wednesday, June 9, 2021 – Thursday, June 17, 2021.

3. Application Materials

Use the provided checklist to verify that you have all the required application materials. The checklist is also available on the back of the print version of the Admission Questionnaire (Doctoral Program)

Please complete the printed version of the Admission Questionnaire.

Make sure to submit the Admission Questionnaire, including preferences for potential faculty advisors.

Read the 2022 Guidelines for Applicants to the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, contact the faculty of the group of interest, and discuss possible research projects. (However, applicants not having a prior discussion with a faculty member will not be penalized.)

Applicants may only contact faculty members about serving as an advisor prior to submitting an application. However, such conversations are prohibited after application submission.

4. Primary Examinations

Subject areas, written examination

Applicants who have completed or are expecting to complete the Master’s program of the Department of Advanced Materials Science (AMS) will take an individualized examination.

For details regarding the examination venue, refer to the Examination Schedule and List of Examination Venues accompanying the examination admission ticket.

Allow sufficient time when traveling to the examination venue for the written examinations on August 17.

Verify the room assignment for the written examinations on the day of the examination at the entrance of the Institute for Solid State Physics.

Oral Examination

An oral examination (about 5 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for a questions-and-answers session) will be used to assess whether the applicant has sound, specialized knowledge and abilities to become a successful doctoral student.

The applicant will be asked to present a review of past research and a research plan for the Doctoral Program.

Supplementary materials may not be used, while a chalk and a blackboard will be available. A document camera is also provided. You can write on a blank sheet on site with a pen and project this onto the screen with use of the camera instead of the use of the blackboard.

Details regarding the time and location of the oral examination will be distributed after the written examination.

5. Secondary Oral Examination

The secondary examination is scheduled for the end of January 2022. Only applicants who have passed the primary examinations will be notified of the schedule.

6. Admission decision

Admitted applicants will be able to begin the study program in April 2022.
