1. Eligibility

This exam schedule applies to students graduating from a Master's program at the University of Tokyo by the end of October, 2022.

Preference for October admission must be indicated on the Admission Questionnaire. Applicants who fail to graduate before Friday, October 1, 2021 cannot enroll in October, even if they pass the entrance examination.

Applicants wishing to change the October admission preference after submitting an application must notify the Department in writing prior to the Secondary oral examination and make an oral statement to that effect at the oral examination on August 20. After the oral examination, admission preferences cannot be changed.

2. Application Period

Wednesday, June 9, 2021 – Thursday, June 17, 2021.

3. Application Materials

Use the provided checklist to verify that you have all the required application materials. The checklist is also available on the back of the print version of the Admission Questionnaire (Doctoral Program)

Please complete the printed version of the Admission Questionnaire.

Make sure to submit the Admission Questionnaire, including preferences for potential faculty advisors.

Preference for October admission must be indicated on the Admission Questionnaire.

Read the 2022 Guidelines for Applicants to the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, contact the faculty of the group of interest, and discuss possible research projects. (However, applicants not having a prior discussion with a faculty member will not be penalized.)

Applicants may only contact faculty members about serving as an advisor prior to submitting an application. However, such conversations are prohibited after application submission.

4. Written Examination

Subject areas

Applicants who have completed or are expecting to complete the Master’s program of the Department of Advanced Materials Science (AMS) will take an individualized examination.

For details regarding the examination venue, refer to the Examination Schedule and List of Examination Venues accompanying the examination admission ticket.

Allow sufficient time when traveling to the examination venue for the written examinations on August 17.

Verify the room assignment for the written examinations on the day of the examination at the entrance of the Kashiwa research complex.

5. Oral Examination

An oral examination (about 5 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for a questions-and-answers session) will be used to assess whether the applicant has sound, specialized knowledge and abilities to become a successful doctoral student.

Applicants wishing to change the October admission preference after submitting an application must notify the Department in writing prior to the oral examination and make a statement to that effect at the oral examination on August 20. After the oral examination, admission preferences cannot be changed.

Details regarding the time and location of the oral examination will be distributed after the written examination.

6. Admission decision

The admission decisions will mailed to the admitted applicants on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.

If accepting the offer, the admitted applicants must pay the enrollment fee and submit the appropriate documents between Tuesday, September 21 and Wednesday, September 22, 2021. Detailed instructions will be included in the acceptance documents. Please note that if the enrollment procedure is not followed during the specified period, it is assumed that the applicant declined the offer.

Admitted applicants will be able to begin the study program on September 24, 2021.
