4. Primary Examinations

1: Foreign language

English proficiency will be assessed by the TOEFL ITP test. The TOEFL ITP test will be administered by the Department of Advanced Materials Science as an institution-specific assessment of English proficiency. The scores of this test will only be valid as part of the entrance examination for the Department and will not be released.

All applicants must take the TOEFL ITP test. TOEFL and TOEIC score reports will not be accepted.

2. Subject areas, written examination

The applicant may receive individualized questions or choose questions from the fields of physics, chemistry, and materials science. The admission ticket will indicate the type of examination.

Special Selection applicants can receive English translations of the exam questions and have the option to answer in English.

Past subject examination questions in physics, chemistry, and materials science are available in Japanese on the Department’s website. Applicants can obtain English translations of past examination questions by contacting Professor Kohzo ITO (email: kohzo@k.u-tokyo.ac.jp).

3. Oral Examination

An oral examination (about 5 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for a questions-and-answers session) will be used to assess whether the applicant has sound, specialized knowledge and abilities to become a successful doctoral student.

The applicant will be asked to present a review of past research and a research plan for the Doctoral Program.
