1. Eligibility

Applicants who have completed upper secondary education and an undergraduate program outside of Japan, and have obtained or are expecting to obtain a Master’s degree or equivalent outside of Japan by the end of March 2021 are eligible to apply for the January exam schedule for Special Selection for Foreign Graduates.

This schedule is not available for graduates of domestic undergraduate programs.

2. Application Period

Tuesday, November 16, 2021 – Thursday, November 25, 2021.

3. Application Materials

Use the provided checklist to verify that you have all the required application materials. The checklist is also available on the back of the print version of the Admission Questionnaire (Doctoral Program)

Please complete the printed version of the Admission Questionnaire.

Make sure to submit the Admission Questionnaire and indicate in the Questionnaire that you wish to use the January exam schedule for the Special Selection for Foreign Graduates.

Read the 2022 Guidelines for Applicants to the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, contact the faculty of the group of interest, and discuss possible research projects.

The applicant must contact the faculty of the laboratory of interest prior to applying. However, such conversations are prohibited after application submission.

Foreign language

Applicants must submit a TOEFL score report in lieu of the foreign language examination. As for TOEFL-iBT, we do not accept the MyBest score but use the Test Date score.

Applicants must request ETS to send an Institutional Score Report to the Graduate School for Frontier Sciences (GSFS). The Report must arrive at GSFS no later than Friday, January 21 (Tue), 2022.

4. Examination

1. Subject areas, written examination

The applicants will take an individualized subject examination.

Special Selection applicants can receive English translations of the exam questions and have the option to answer in English.

2. Oral Examination

Applicants should be prepared to make a 20-minute presentation on their Master’s thesis research (using a computer, a projector is provided). Each applicant should bring a copy of their Master’s thesis and 20 copies of a 3-page (A4 paper) research summary.

Examination Schedule

The subject and oral examinations will be administered at the end of January 2022.

5. Admission decision

Admitted applicants will be able to begin the study program in April 2022.
