Applicants who have completed upper secondary education and an undergraduate program outside of Japan, and have obtained or are expecting to obtain a Master’s degree or equivalent outside of Japan by the end of October 2021 are eligible to apply for the Special Selection for Foreign Graduates.
Preference for October admission must be indicated on the Admission Questionnaire. Applicants who fail to graduate before Thursday, October 1, 2021 cannot enroll in October, even if they pass the entrance examination. Applicants wishing to change the October admission preference after submitting an application must notify the Department in writing prior to the Secondary oral examination and make an oral statement to that effect at the oral examination on August 20. After the oral examination, admission preferences cannot be changed.

Read the 2022 Guidelines for Applicants to the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, contact the faculty of the group of interest, and discuss possible research projects.
The applicant must contact the faculty of the laboratory of interest prior to applying. However, such conversations are prohibited after application submission.
English proficiency will be assessed by the TOEFL ITP test. The TOEFL ITP test will be administered by the Department of Advanced Materials Science as an institution-specific assessment of English proficiency. The scores of this test will only be valid as part of the entrance examination for the Department and will not be released.
All applicants must take the TOEFL ITP test. TOEFL and TOEIC score reports will not be accepted.
The applicant may receive individualized questions or choose questions from the fields of physics, chemistry, and materials science. The admission ticket will indicate the type of examination.
Special Selection applicants can receive English translations of the exam questions and have the option to answer in English.

Allow sufficient time when traveling to the examination venue for the written examinations on August 17.
Verify the room assignment for the written examinations on the day of the examination at the entrance of the Institute for Solid State Physics.
Details regarding the time and location of the oral examination will be distributed after the written examination.
Applicants should be prepared to make a 20-minute presentation on their Master’s thesis research (using a computer, a projector is provided). Each applicant should bring a copy of their Master’s thesis and 20 copies of a 3-page (A4 paper) research summary.
Applicants wishing to change the October admission preference after submitting an application must notify the Department in writing prior to the oral examination and make a statement to that effect at the oral examination. After the oral examination, admission preferences cannot be changed.

The admission decisions will mailed to the admitted applicants on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.
If accepting the offer, the admitted applicants must pay the enrollment fee and submit the appropriate documents between Thursday, September 21 and Friday, September 22, 2021. Detailed instructions will be included in the acceptance documents. Please note that if the enrollment procedure is not followed during the specified period, it is assumed that the applicant declined the offer.
Admitted applicants will be able to begin the study program on October 1st, 2021.
