1. Eligibility

In addition to meeting the eligibility requirements listed in the Guidelines for Applicants, an applicant in this category must be the first author of at least one peer-reviewed paper written in English, which has been published or accepted for publication.

2. Application Period

Wednesday, June 9, 2021 – Thursday, June 17, 2021.

3. Application Materials

Use the provided checklist to verify that you have all the required application materials. The checklist is also available on the back of the print version of the Admission Questionnaire (Doctoral Program)

Please complete the printed version of the Admission Questionnaire.

Make sure to submit the Admission Questionnaire and indicate in the Questionnaire that you wish to apply for the Special Selection for Professionals.

In addition to the application materials listed in the Guidelines for Applicants, a copy of the Master’s thesis or equivalent document must be submitted along with a separate abstract and a list of scientific achievements (publications, scientific presentations, patents, etc.). Refer to the checklist for details.

Preference for October admission must be indicated in the Admission Questionnaire.

Read the 2022 Guidelines for Applicants to the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, contact the faculty of the group of interest, and discuss possible research projects. (However, applicants not having a prior discussion with a faculty member will not be penalized.)

Applicants may only contact faculty members about serving as an advisor prior to submitting an application. However, such conversations are prohibited after application submission.

4. Examinations

1. Foreign language

English proficiency will be assessed by the TOEFL ITP test. The TOEFL ITP test will be administered by the Department of Advanced Materials Science as an institution-specific assessment of English proficiency. The scores of this test will only be valid as part of the entrance examination for the Department and will not be released.

All applicants, except for students graduating from a Master's program at the University of Tokyo must take the TOEFL ITP test. TOEFL and TOEIC score reports will not be accepted.

2. Oral Examination

The oral examination (about 40 minutes per applicant) will be used to assess whether the applicant has sound, specialized knowledge and abilities to become a successful doctoral student.

Each applicant will give a 20-minute presentation about his or her research and future direction (using a computer and a projector).

Each applicant should bring 20 copies of a 3-page (A4 paper) summary of his or her presentation and a list of scientific achievements (publications, scientific presentations, patents, etc.) that were submitted as part of the application materials.

For details regarding the examination venue, refer to the Examination Schedule and List of Examination Venues accompanying the examination admission ticket.

Allow sufficient time when traveling to the examination venue for the written examinations on August 17.

Verify the room assignment for the written examinations on the day of the examination at the entrance of the Kashiwa research complex.

5. Admission decision

Admitted applicants will be able to begin the study program in September 2021.

Acceptance documents will mailed to the admitted applicants on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.

If accepting the offer, the admitted applicants must pay the enrollment fee and submit the appropriate documents between Tuesday, September 14 and Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Detailed instructions will be included in the acceptance documents. Please note that if the enrollment procedure is not followed during the specified period, it is assumed that the applicant declined the offer.

Admitted applicants will be able to begin the study program on October 1, 2021.
